4 out of 5 stars Samsonite bag   August 23, 2008
It is everything I expected and serves my needs. I travel quite a bit for extended periods of time. This bag was large enough for me to throw in whatever I need during my travel. Also, it is durable and surprisingly light weight.

4 out of 5 stars LUGGAGE   November 16, 2007
I have a luggage container from samsonite that is 20 years old that the lock was broken on. I wanted a replacement for it and found this new model. The plastic is not as strong as my original suitcase, but it gets the job done. The new handle that allows the suitcase to roll on the fattest side is much better and more stable than the old one that allows the suitcase to roll on its skinney side. The locks are strong and the wheels roll very nicely.

4 out of 5 stars lightweight, sturdy - wish it had better handles   August 27, 2007

We bought this luggage to contain some very heavy items we travel with (my husband has a physical disability and this is his transfer device to move from the bed to the wheelchair). The transfer device weighs about 65 pounds. The size is perfect, the straps that snap over the top are useless for something so heavy but would work well for clothing. What I love about this piece is that it's very lightweight and yet was able to transport the device without trouble. My only complaint is that there is really only one handle to use when lifting the bag - the one on the side. If there was another handle on the top besides the pulling one, that would be perfect. It is very awkward to lift the bag otherwise. I find I have to use the plastic feet on the bottom of the bag for a hand hold and they are not the best shape for that use - sharp edges and small size allow only for careful finger placement, which is hard to do on the airport luggage roundabouts. Warranty is nice.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Protection   December 21, 2006

Rolls nice and good. I bought it to protect my valuables in the harsh airline travel environment and it did very well. Not many other frills in this case, but I was not looking for them either.
Be aware that hard cases weigh more than the soft and you may come closer to the weight restrictions of your particular airline.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Suitcases, The Worst of Suitcases   July 17, 2006

Well fellow travelers, there's good news and there's bad news about the Samsonite F'Lite hardside.

Let me begin by saying, between the two of us my wife and I own four of the cordovan [bright red -- EASY TO SPOT] 31" F'Lite and one 28" suitcase that we've flown with several times to Eastern Europe during the past three years. Generally, they are tough and VERY spacious suitcases. There is a temptation to put everything in there but the kitchen sink, and the next thing you know your luggage is WAY over weight. BUT during five international trips not one of the cases got cracked -- gouged, but not broken.

The Best of Suitcases: These are very spacious, easy to roll and securely closed cases. HANDY TIP: Security doesn't permit the checked suitcases to be locked -- unless you stand there as they X-ray it, then you ask them to lock it. Anyhow, any crook with a screw driver can pry the locks open in less than 60 seconds. Let's get real here: the closures -- albeit they do keep the suitcases well closed -- are simply made of thin metal and plastic. Here's what I do. Get a roll of HIGH QUALITY duct tape (the 4-inch wide, very sticky, grey silver kind). Then with 6" lengths of tape, carefully tape over the three latches. SECURITY can still open the case if it has to, then replace the tape -- which they'll do. Crooks are somewhat more deterred not knowing whether after removing the tape they'll still have time to pop the lock. Also, the tape makes the suitcases even easier to spot. Plus the tape prevents the closures from accidentally popping open because the edges (which could get caught on something) are concealed under the tape. 'Just an extra precaution that works for me.

The Worst of Suitcases: There are two serious drawbacks of the 31" F'Lite.
#1: if while the telescopic handle is extended someone grabs it to pick up a heavily fully loaded suitcase, there's a 50/50 chance it will get slightly or seriously bent.
#2: Samsonite should have added a second handle to the side. About five years ago, they made a 29"-30" hard side precursor of the F'Lite model with TWO handles. That spared the telescopic handle and also provided TWO points for lifting the suitcase -- very sensible.

Finally, on my very last trip to Eastern Europe the airlines/baggage handlers managed to knock off one of the wheels from one of the suitcase. My guess is that the airline will deny responsibility -- and so will Samsonite, 'cause that may not have been a manufacturing defect. True, this is a first for me after a couple of years of using this model. But my gut instinct tells me that the wheel should have stayed on. Now, what will I do with a one wheel upright?

I'm not ready to get rid of my collection of Samsonite F'Lite suitcases. But when I find a repair shop to fix the wheel (if they can get a replacement wheel from Samsonite!), I'm going to ask them to add a second handle on to the side!
