Product Description Rick Steves? Convertible Carry On is the most versatile carry-on bag you?ll find. As Rick?s favorite, he had no problem living out of it for three months. This large 2,500 cubic-inch bag features three outside pockets?perfect for often-used items. Includes handy extras: a pair of mesh bags and a clip-in security pouch, and both internal and external compression straps. For extra capacity just pull open the fullperimeter expando-zipper, and its capacity jumps to 3,000 cubic inches. The Convertible Carry On easily converts from a smart-looking suitcase to a handy backpack, with comfortably-curved shoulder straps and a padded waistbelt. To use as a suitcase, the straps and waistbelt safely tuck away in the back (or check it as luggage in ?expanded? mode).

Light, strong and room for everything January 5, 2009 Our son used one on a 3 week, 10 country tour of Europe and 5 more weeks in Vienna this summer and it came back looking new. My husband and I used that one and another one of these and one Civitas day pack Rick Steves Civita Shoulder Bag (which very nicely folded flat inside the convertable on the plane, and with 2 water bottle pockets, we only had to carry one for both of us on day trips) for a 17 day trip escorted trip to China.
Our tour guide was amazed that we had only the two convertable bags. We sent him to the[..] and[..] websites to show him how it can be done. We each used a packing cube set Rick Steves Rick Steves Packing Cube Set and one Eagle Creek folder Eagle Creek Pack-It Folder 18 and I made and we each packed a 22" x 21" collapsable shoulder bag of ripstop nylon to use as a "purse" on the way home. Each ripstop bag would hold a set of packing cubes, and meet airline requirements for going under the seat. Moving the packing cubes out left half of each convertable open for purchases we had made on the trip. I also love the way the cubes make it easy to get at anything in the suitcase without messing up anything else.
The front pockets one the Rick Steves convertable are perfectly thought out for documents and snacks or reading materials on the front and the long front one is good for a jacket or those flat things, like prints, one picks up along the way. Our daughter has the rolling version and puts her laptop in the front long pocket, although it does contribute to making it tipsy. I put my laptop between the layer of packing cubes and the Eagle Creek folder, which gives it extra cushioning and still leaves it easy to get out. Although the convertable sits directly on the ground, so one has to be careful about wet and dirt, I had no troubles with them tipping over on either the side or end and the extra handle on the end made it easy to get in and out of overhead bins.
We thought long and hard about whether to go with the rolling version or the convertable and I have been happy with the convertiable. Packed for a long trip, it weighs about 22# and carrying it with either the sholder strap or the backpack straps is quite doable. The 4# less weight and more room (taken up by the handle tubes on the rolling one) is worth having to carry it.
Great Product November 23, 2008 The Carry-On was great quality and the more we used it, the better we liked it. It worked best using the cubes, as they helped keep everything in place. If you want the flexability of being able to slip it on as a back pack and also be able to use it as a suitcase, I would highly recommend it.
To italy and back July 9, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great bag with lots of storage, easy to carry etc..
but i had a connecting flight from bologna to rome. The domestic flights in italy had small storage area. This bag did not fit into those.
The crew had to make special arrangement for me to accomodate this bag.
otherwise this is a good bag with lot of comfort.
FYI - Keep an eye out at REI outlet, i bought this for 47 USD. The REI outlet sale is usually during the summer.
If you are traveling domestic in italy, i suggest you check this bag in and not carry.

My wife and I ordered one each for a two week vacation to Italy. I was amazed at how much stuff we could pack into these bags and still count the bags as carry on (folks at Air France almost seemed disappointed when the bag fit into the size tester...they were having a field day making people check their bags that day). The bags were comfortable on our backs and made traveling from place to place easier than I expected. I would definately recommend to anyone who has a busy itinerary.
Convertible Bag Saves the Day May 16, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
We just got back from a trip to Italy using this bag for 3 weeks. My wife used the rolling bag and I shouldered the convertible bag. This worked out great: some places we rolled (with my day pack on wife's bag extended handle) and some places we lifted both bags. Both Rick Steves bags are super sturdy, with great zippers, many compartments, and extra mesh bags. We really enjoyed using these bags. They expand out if you want to check them...and by the end of the trip, we had to expand them.
