Perfect bag for laptop and, whatever you wanna put into it~ December 16, 2008 This is a heavy duty and nicely designed backpack with multi special features, I would suggest this backpack to who want to protect their laptop while enjoy a comfortable experience~
Nice quality, but too bulky. September 30, 2008 I purchased this backpack because I tote my laptop with me pretty much everywhere I go and the strain was starting to cause me back problems. I wanted a pack that had sufficient lumbar support but also looked good without costing me an arm and leg.
I did my search online and with all the positive reviews thought I'd really hit the jackpot with this bag. But as with any online purchase, it was a gamble, and I was disappointed with the bag when it came. I personally don't think my laptop needs quite the amount of padding they've put into this bag, which causes it to be very bulky (despite also being light). I'm about 5'3" tall, so bulkiness (plus that fact that the bag itself is wider than my body) didn't work for me. It would work better for people with larger frames who are looking for a light bag with lumbar support.
As for the other design features, the bottom compartment for power cables, etc. doesn't make sense to me at all, not only bc whatever is in that compartment will be crushed from the contents above, but also bc the zipper is embedded in huge, padded gusset that makes a) opening and closing the compartment a pain, and b) makes putting stuff into (and out of) the compartment a pain as well. The "locker door" design is also flawed in my opinion bc you can only open the flap halfway, making it difficult to reach whatever might be at the bottom or bottom-left of the compartment.
As for the color, the green isn't too bright for me and has a slightly grey sheen that looks nice. The bottom has a rubbery coating, which I liked as well, and the materials used for this bag seem to be good quality. The zippers are a little flappy, but nothing too serious.
And last but not least, I wasn't impressed with the lumbar support (the main reason I wanted this bag) -- it isn't well-padded, the adjustment mechanism didn't work properly (though that was fine with me bc it allowed for more than 3 levels of adjustment), and I would have preferred it to be a little taller. I also felt that the straps (spaced only about 3 or so inches apart) put more strain on my shoulders/neck than my current bag. But again, perhaps this bag just wasn't the right size and fit for me.
Overall a great bag if you have a larger frame (otherwise the pack might end up looking like a giant turtle shell!).
Good bag, lightweight, utilitarian May 12, 2007 Well designed, well constructed bag. I find the protection it offers to be perfectly fine. Though definitely a step down from a high quality bag like the old Port Thinkpad bags, the protection it offers is much better than other comparably-priced bags I have seen. I would certainly not toss it into a luggage rack, like another reviewer said he is comfortable doing, and I would not drop it even a few inches onto a hard surface, though it does offer some protection against both. There is a sling bottom in the laptop compartment, so your laptop does not sit on the bottom of the bag. The laptop goes in end first, which I was not particularly happy to discover, but which has been perfectly fine. There are plenty of compartments, though not as many as on the old Port backpack. However, this bag is more compact and carries with a considerably lighter feel and more comforably than the Port. If you wear a suit, it will not look corporate enough. However, I am perfectly comfortable taking into a corporate environment as an outside consultant. But then I am also perfectly comfortable working in downtown San Francisco upscale corporate offices in blue jeans. All-in-all, I am very happy with this bag - particularly with how comfortably it carries.
Good product February 17, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this backpack because I had read so many reviews on other websites (mostly tech sites) and they all rated this bag as one of the highest for quality and protection.
After owning other computer backpacks I was a little hesitant to get another. All the ones I had tried before were little more than regular backpacks with an extra 1/4" of padding on either side of the computer. However, I am a student and I need the extra space for a book or two and the hands-free comfort that only a backpack can provide.
The Kensington Contour Cargo has provided all of that. Yes, it is a little bulky in some ways. It's a bit wide for my frame, but I am also smaller than most people. The "contraption" on the back of the bag mentioned by another reviewer is an adjustable lumbar support mechanism so you can customize for the most comfortable fit. The style may not be for everyone, but it isn't ugly and it fulfills the most important needs in a laptop backpack.
There are numerous pockets and storage hidey holes all over which are virtually invisible when the bag is all zipped up. Also, for the size of the bag it doesn't fit as much as you would expect--at least if you're expecting a regular backpacks capacity.
The padding is so extensive that I've never worried about my computers safety in it. The padded laptop pocket snugly holds the laptop, leaving room for a couple text books or binders in the same compartment. The middle compartment is separated with another thick layer of padding and holds notebooks and paper. The outermost pocket is for smaller things like pens, a media drive or your ipod, it has thin padding on the outer wall to protect those items, and the bottom, sides and back of the pack are also very well protected.
A few other pockets are hidden around the bag as well. On either side there is an adjustable zip/velcro pocket for water bottles; both of these pockets contour (source of the bag's name?) around the side/bottom of the bag, minimizing risk of frying your computer if they leak. There are also side compartments for an ipod and earbuds so you can listen to mp3s while wearing the bag. Last but not least is a pocket on the bottom front of the bag (again virtually invisible) which is well padded and holds power cords beautifully.
All in all this bag was designed with utility in mind. I think I could drop this on the ground and not be too worried about my computer. It's very comfortable, the only detriment being it's width and it's waterproof for those of us who take their computer everywhere and have to worry about rain and snow. The sacrifice, of course is sleekness. So, it just depends on what you want out of your bag. If you want something with maximum protection, high durability and extra storage this is a good bag, especially for the price. If you want something compact that holds little more than your laptop and is mostly for basic short-term travel protection, go for something else.
disappointing July 19, 2006 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
This backpack looks good on screen, but the reality is disappointing.
For what it holds, it is bulky. There is an adjustable contraption on the back, but I can't see what it does, except take up space. The zippers catch if you are not careful. Personally, I don't find the color appealing, but someone else may like it.
Size-wise, it seems just about right for a 15" screen. I think 15.4" would be tight.
Still, the price is reasonable, and it is by no means shoddy. If you like extra padding on the back and shoulders and don't need too much carrying space, you may find it ideal.
