Most wildlife photography, even that of the anointed masters who suffer great hardships and spend weeks or more capturing a single perfect image, falls more properly into the category of photojournalism than it does fine art photography. Not so the work of Nick Brandt, whose splendid images of African animals are a visual revelation.
Working solely in black-and-white, and without the use of telephone lenses, Brandt captures the heart and soul of his wild subjects -- a dust-bathing elephant in a shimmering cloud, a wind-swept lion facing into a storm, and classic still-life congregations of giraffes and cheetahs and zebras. Just as captivating are his studio-grade portraits of rhinos and chimpanzees and others. But Brandt's most evocative images are his breathtaking wide shots -- some in glowing infrared -- that place these familiar animals squarely in the context of their varied environments in ways that seem altogether new and fresh.
"On This Earth" is like no other book of African wildlife photography. Prepare to be awed.

Photographs with emotional impact October 20, 2008 Nick Brandt's book is simply put the most incredible collection of images I have viewed. They had such an emotional effect on me that I literally felt goosebumps! An amazing achievement - I only wish I could afford to have his prints covering my walls - Matt.
just great August 5, 2008 This artist is just amazing, since I saw his exhibition, I never forgot the intensity of these original masterpiece. So why only 4 stars?? I don't know, the book is too small? The printing? it's never perfect but the photographs... The photographs ...
A wellspring of insipiration for the nature photographer (and nature lover) July 17, 2008 As an avid photographer - and one who has spent a lot of time shooting in EA - these are precisely the sort of images that make me want to grab my camera and rush back into the Serengeti. It's a well selected collection - perhaps not the greatest photographs I have ever seen, but a beautiful selection nontheless. A wonderful departure from the stock "post-card" photograpy that's been pouring out of the continent, and some are so breathtakingly vivid (like the image used on the cover) that you can almost feel the dust swirl around you, and feel the hot African sun on your neck.
It's a beautiful book. Would make an an ideal gift for the nature photographer, and for the nature lover...

This is a wonderful book with some great pictures of the African wildlife. The black and white photos were striking and the book appeals to 3 years of age to 65. It captured the African wildlife that I have had the privilege of seeing first hand on two occasions.
