Detailed guide for touring Alaska by car or RV September 2, 2010 Allen Wolf (BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI, US) If you are planning where to go in Alaska, get yourself Lonely Planet, Frommers or a similar guidebook. Once you've decided where you are going and you plan to travel by car or RV, Milepost can be invaluable for the details that you would love to have. Appropriately named, this publication lists the highway mileposts and tells you what is there -- the sights to see (and how to see them), places to stay, places to get gas, etc. It was cool to be driving on a highway and read something like, "At milepost 37, look to the Northeast to see a great view of two glaciers..." To contain so much data, it has to be a rather hefty book and it is. So, the major disadvantage is its weight. It would be nice if it had better cross-references. While there are sections about the major attractions/cities, I didn't find these as good as you'll find in the major brand guidebooks. While a new one is published each year, you can easily get by with one that is a couple of years old.
Worth Buying August 21, 2010 R. Aikens (San Antonio, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just completed the journey from TX to Alaska. This is a nice guide, giving you great tips on how to travel the different routes from the US to Alaska. Most of the useful information you will need prior to planning the trip and much is already online. The book's usefulness wanes while actually driving the Alaska Highway. It becomes a bit difficult to follow, mainly because the road is not marked accurately in each of the provinces/states.
With that said, it helped to know how big each upcoming rest area was. However, the descriptions probably don't match reality in the smaller towns. I have seen better travel books, that is why I gave this a 4 of 5. However, if you are making your first trip on the Alaska Highway, this is a must buy. Find it on Amazon or other places for 20 bucks or less. Even buy an older edition, the road does not change that much year to year. If you try to buy it in Canada, expect to pay $30+. The drive is actually not hard at all and the road was in great condition (early August trip). I highly recommend the drive over the ferry, you have to do it at least once.
